At the yard, Watson 60 progress

From the yard, Watson 60 progress

Hull completion is always a milestone which signals the start of the paint system.
Application of the first coat of epoxy primer is applied immediately after abrasive blasting.

We leave this coat for several weeks to allow both for shrinkage and dissipation of any residual solvents before commencing the fairing process.
If there is one important coat in the whole paint system, this is it

The W60 design incorporates a hull extension swim platform; we will talk a little more about this soon.

The fabricators will now put together the superstructure; deckhouse, wheelhouse and fly-bridge all as a complete separate entity for consolidation onto the hull.

Typical of our pilothouse designs is the large well deck forward. This is a safe, protected area for working in when anchoring or docking the vessel. Note the large freeing ports or “scuppers” for removal of water from this deck. We will be dedicating a whole article to freeing ports and the implications of “containing” green water on deck as part of the “stability” section on the main web page.

Conspicuous inside the engine room are the engine bed girders. Our range of motor yachts are offered either twin or single screw installation and for this ship we are fitting two John Deere 6068s continuous rated at 154 BHP each.

To the outboard sides are the stabilizer actuator hull inserts and reinforcing. One of the advantages of steel construction is the ability to “design in” strength that is not obtainable in other materials. In this case these are designed to be strong enough to absorb twice the bending moment of the stabilizer actuator shaft in the case of fin damage due to grounding or collision.

Work will now start on the engine room fit out; floor plate framing, pipe systems, machinery and electrical installation. This work is completed as “blue sky” fit out; giving ease of access with no superstructure in place, a practice learnt from big ship construction.

This photo is looking into the full width aft owner’s stateroom. The tank is a double bottom fuel tank; another advantage of metal construction is the ability to incorporate tanks integral with the hull construction which also allows for an increased safety factor.

As always, for those who are considering the purchase of a passage maker now or maybe sometime in the future I am always pleased to arrange an inspection.

While photos are able to give a good impression there is nothing like seeing the vessel in person.

If you are visiting New Zealand from overseas please contact me direct to arrange a time that will fit your itinerary.
